Parade Chairman Takes A David And Goliath Approach

It's the stuff of dreams. Twenty-four new houses waiting to be called homes. Located in three tempting Waukesha County locations, the Metropolitan Builders Association of Greater Milwaukee, beginning Saturday, will proudly present the 54th Annual Parade of Homes.

"We were the first-ever Parade of Homes in the country and we are the longest running," says David Rodrigues, event chairman and president of David and Goliath Builders, Inc.

"Eighteen of the 24 houses have either master bedroom on the first floor or they are ranch style. There will be a lot of open lofts this year. Very casual, comfortable houses. Only one house has a living room; the others have large great rooms; dining rooms are still in.

"There are a lot of built-in appliances, high ceilings, cabinets, walk-in closets and pantries. You are going to see a lot more interior faux painting this year, as far as wall painting goes, and less wallpaper. There is more glass and more and larger windows."

Other interior points of interest will be fashionable window treatments along with flooring in wood, ceramic tile and vinyl.

In his first year as chairman, Rodrigues brings to the event 14 years of building houses for discerning suburbanites. In addition, he chairs the MBA Arbitration Board and Ethics Committee, and sits on the board of directors.

Of the 11-month event preparation schedule, Rodrigues said, "You have to be aware of what's going on at the sites. There is a monthly meeting and you have to give reports on what's done on each home site and the progression. In order to get the work done, you end up juggling people. We've had up to 30 people working on our home at the same time."

Plentiful Hours

On Saturday, and running until September 12, the model homes will be open for viewing in three separate subdivisions. The Fairways at the Broadlands in North Prairie, Kelly Pointe situations in New Berlin and Two Rivers of Mukwonago, will open 24 front doors to Parade of Home goers from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day.

Presenting his fourth Parade of Homes model, this year the Pewaukee based builder has chose to build in the Two Rivers subdivision a two-story classic design called the Oconomowoc Cape II.

With 2,500 square feet of living space, Rodrigues has created as the focal point a great room that presents itself as the hub of the first floor design. Radiating from the hub with the gestalt of cathedral ceilings, skylights, transom windows and a corner brick fireplace is a master bedroom suite including a walk-in closet and master bathroom.

The confluence further boasts an exposed basement, gourmet kitchen/dinette and a formal dining room. A mud room and laundry room area juxtapose the three-car garage.

The second floor features a loft, two spacious bedrooms and the main bathroom. The open design interior colorscape is coordinated from room to room in earth-tone hues. Parade goes will marvel at the mixture of natural and painted wood kitchen cabinets.

Ease of Maintenance

The ease of maintenance, Rodrigues fitted the exterior of the river view hose in stone, sandstone vinyl siding and wood-grained PVC coated aluminum fascia. Traxx decking material provides a maintenance-free rear deck. A sweeping landscape draws the eye to the restful beauty of trees and shrubbery encircling the house.

We are the only company in Wisconsin that has their own masons, rough carpenters and finish carpenters, Rodrigues pointed out. "We employee 14 people and we do all the architectural design. We have two designers and we provide design services on our three-dimensional computer aided design system. We actually build our homes. We are not just a project manager or general contractor.

Rodrigues found David & Goliath Builders, Inc. the year he married Ann. With his wife as company vice president the two have worked together to achieve the ultimate American dreamscape - a successful business.

Learning the building trades firsthand before stepping out on his own, Rodrigues said, was an enormous help. Ann's business acumen and adeptness in advertising and marketing makes for a winning combination. As the rhythms of their lives intertwined, the couple added to the family two children.

Rodrigues is also working toward his own personal dream: "I'm looking forward to one or both of them (his children) someday joining the business, he said of daughter Valerie, 8 and son Benjamin, 7.

As the Parade of Homes gets under way, Rodrigues will be on hand to greet people viewing his house and to answer questions pertaining to any of the 24 show houses.

Additionally, suburbanites may contact him through his web site at www.davidgoliath.com or by calling David & Goliath Builders Inc. at 262-691-881.

With the theme of "one ticket, two feet, three weeks," the Parade of Homes can advance the dream of future homeowners who gaze at the latest in home design, décor and materials, or it can be a house buying dream home come true.
